A lecturer at the Kumasi Technical University, Dr Collins Kankam Kwarteng, has urged the government to establish dedicated security units for senior high schools (SHSs) under its proposed 24-hour Economy initiative.
He said the current security arrangements at senior high schools across the country were inadequate and potentially dangerous, particularly in institutions with more than 3,000 students.
According to him, each school should have dozens of security personnel working in at least two shifts daily to ensure round-the-clock protection.
“These security officers must be trained, given a special uniform and stationed in schools for 24-hour protection,” Dr Kwarteng said.
He made the remarks on Kumasi-based OTEC FM on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
Dr Kwarteng called for the complete abolition of what he described as the “watchman” system, arguing that the existing arrangement left schools vulnerable to security threats.
He said relying on a single watchman was inadequate, particularly at night and during weekends, when schools remained exposed to potential security breaches.
He urged the government to take urgent steps to improve security in senior high schools as part of the proposed 24-hour Economy initiative.
