Forikrom (B/A), March 11, GNA - Nana Kwaw Adams, Executive Director of Abrono Organic Farming Programmes, has called on the government to legalize chainsaw operations in the country.

He noted that the Government, Traditional Authorities, District Assemblies, Forestry Commission and all stakeholders connected with the timber industry were victims of illegal chainsaw operations. Nana Adams, who is the Twafohene of Forikrom in the Techiman Traditional Area made the call at a one-day sensitisation workshop for 40 members at Forikrom.

The workshop was aimed at educating the participants on the Timber Resource Management Regulations, 1998 (LI 1649) as amended by Timber Resources Management Regulation, 2003 (L 11721).

Nana Adams said the legalization of the chainsaw operations would enable the government to earn more revenue and also create jobs. "If chainsaw operations were legalized as was done to the exchange of currencies on the black market that led to the formation of Forex Bureau, the government and for that matter district and municipal assemblies would generate more revenue for the completion of more development projects", he said.
