Chairman for the Okada Association at Techiman, Awal Mohammed, has impressed upon government to legalize the use of Okada for commercial purposes.

Currently, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has banned the use of motorbikes for commercial purposes in the country.

But the use of motorbikes used for commercial purposes have become a booming venture. The chairman in an interview with Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm said the youth unemployment in Ghana could be reduced if the commercial purpose of Okada is legalized.

He noted, at Techiman, the youth operates the business of Tricycles and it would be important for the state to legalize it for them. In Rwanda, they have regulated the business and so why has Ghana not legalize same? We should go and learn from Rwanda on how they did theirs.’’

A section of the public has alleged that some policemen owned many of the motorbikes used for the Okada business. Some of the motorbikes used for the business are not registered, while others use the number plates of vehicles.

Another issue is that most of the Okada riders do not have the appropriate licence (Licence A) for motor riding. The chairman, commenting on it called for education and licensing of motor riders to solve the problem.
