Legon directed to relocate security post

Authorities of the University of Ghana have been directed to relocate new Security Observation Post being constructed at the Okponglo entrance of the school.

This direction came after a meeting was held between representatives of the university and officials of the National Security secretariat and the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) on Friday.

The meeting was to discuss the reconstruction of booths, pulled down by the National Security secretariat early this year.

The booths were originally constructed to aid in a policy to collect tolls from users of the University’s roads.

After the policy was met with public outcry, the University backed down on the policy but directed all visiting motorists without approved stickers to use the Okponglo point as entrance to its campus.

Then National Security Coordinator Lieutenant Colonel Larry Gbevlo Lartey directed the pulling down the booths, citing that it was posing a nuisance to traffic on the Tetteh Quarshie-Adenta-Aburi highway.

But the new posts to serve as a security checkpoint is being constructed from the rubbles of the toll booths.

Friday’s meeting reminded the University of the need to obtain a social impact assessment from the Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] before reconstructing the booths for any other purpose.

“The security team also directed the University to put on hold the on-going construction work until the impact assessment report is obtained, or the project is relocated,” a statement issued after the meeting said.

It assured the public of free flow of traffic on the Tetteh Quarshie-Aburi Highway.
