The Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS) has urged the government to encourage all second cycle, private and public schools to establish cadet corps with well programmed military training.

The association, which is concerned about upheavals in the West African sub-region, called on government to put in place measures to avoid future problems.

The President of GNAPS, Godwin Adjetey Sowah on Thursday, said the government must set up a committee to work out modalities for the conscription of National service personnel into the Ghana Armed Forces.

“Obviously, our concern emanates from very recent and ongoing developments in the sub-region, involving the activities of armed militants, terrorists, and insurgents. Ghana will not wait to be overtaken by events or be caught pants down.”

According to Mr. Sowah, the country is surrounded by French-speaking countries, but citizens from Francophone countries speak more English than we, Ghanaians, speak French.

“Indeed, it is sometimes embarrassing if not shameful that very insignificant number of Ghanaians can speak fluent French. There have been numerous attempts by Government to reverse the trend without visible results.”

GNAPS has decided to encourage students to write, read and speak fluent French from nursery to secondary level.

The President said the association would be committed to a contractual arrangement to develop new teaching and learning schemes with the French Embassy in the country to create a new generation of Ghanaians.

He said as part of the celebration they would use a week to conduct self examination, self evaluation and interact with parents and the general public on issues relating to childcare, child welfare, children’s protection.

“We will look at the National Education Standard Barometer, whether education standards are falling or rising and take appropriate steps.”
