Let's not politicise illiteracy eradication - Dzamesi

Ho, June 15, GNA - Mr Kofi Dzamesi, Deputy Volta Regional Minister, on Monday said illiteracy eradication issues should not be politicised because literacy levels affect development.

He noted that a highly illiterate community suffers several setbacks in development efforts.

Mr Dzamesi was opening a four-day general meeting of Regional and District Coordinators of the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports at Ho.

The Minister said government decided to restructure the NFED so as to make its services to the people more effective and efficient. He noted that the task involved in literacy delivery required "qualified, competent, committed and hard working people."

Mr Dzamesi gave the assurance that government would provide the necessary logistics for the Division to carry through its programmes and thanked the World Bank for supporting non-formal education in the country.

Mr Samuel Salifu Mogre, Director of NFED told the Ghana News Agency that the Division was collaborating with some NGOs to prosecute its mission.

He said though the Division mainly handled illiterates between the ages of 15 and 45, it was also implementing a programme that targeted school dropouts.

Mr Thomas Seshie, Volta Regional Co-ordinator of the NFED, said the large number of illiterates in the country posed a challenge to the Co-ordinators.

During the meeting, participants would review the programmes of the NFED, identify challenges, strengths, weaknesses and share ideas to improve performances.
