The Paramount Chief and President of the Aflao Traditional Area, Torgbiga Amenya Fiti V, who doubles as the President of the Forum of Kings, Queens, Sultans, Sheikhs, and Traditional Leaders of Africa, has called on Ghanaians to be mindful of their actions in order to safeguard the peace and stability of the country following the peaceful and successful conduct of the December 7 general elections.
According to him, the people of Ghana have once again demonstrated their deep commitment to democracy by peacefully exercising their sovereign right to vote on the 7th of December, 2024.
"Through the ballot box, they have spoken clearly, expressing their collective will in choosing the next President and Members of Parliament. This act is a resounding affirmation of the trust Ghanaians place in democratic governance and the strength of our nation’s institutions," he noted.
Torgbiga Amenya Fiti emphasized that as custodians of peace, harmony, and unity, it is the collective responsibility of every Ghanaian to ensure that the sacrifices made to uphold Ghana’s democracy are neither undermined nor betrayed, adding that the commitment shown by Ghanaians must be matched by the unwavering dedication of all stakeholders to preserve the sanctity of the electoral process and the stability of the nation.
The revered Paramount Chief firmly stated that any actions that could lead to confusion, disorder, or instability will constitute a betrayal of the trust placed in leadership by the people of Ghana. "Such actions will not only tarnish the progress we have achieved as a nation but will also be met with deep disapproval from the citizenry."
In his capacity as President of the Forum of Kings, Queens, Sultans, Sheikhs, and Traditional Leaders of Africa, Torgbiga Amenya Fiti offered solemn counsel to the various political parties, the Electoral Commission, the Police, and other stakeholders in the electoral process in a bid to ease the tension and agitations following the polls:
• To the Electoral Commission: The integrity of Ghana’s democracy rests on your shoulders. Your mandate is to conduct elections that are transparent, impartial, and credible. Any form of negligence, favouritism, or misconduct will erode public trust and must be avoided at all costs. Uphold your constitutional duty with honor and fairness.
• To the Political Actors: Both those who emerge victorious and those who do not must act with dignity and statesmanship. Winners are called to lead with humility and inclusivity, while those who concede must respect the will of the people and seek redress through lawful and peaceful means. Leadership is about service, not division.
• To the Incoming and Outgoing Presidents: The peaceful transfer of power is a cornerstone of democracy. It is incumbent upon both of you to prioritize the nation’s stability and reputation. Ghana’s standing as a beacon of democracy in Africa must not be compromised through any act of irresponsibility.
• To the People of Ghana: Your unity and vigilance are vital to sustaining peace. Ghana is greater than any individual, party, or personal ambition. Let us remain steadfast in protecting the values of democracy and promoting harmony within our communities.
Torgbiga Amenya Fiti V also pledged the commitment of all traditional leaders in the country to ensuring that peace and unity continue to prevail in the country at all times.
"As traditional leaders, we are committed to working tirelessly to foster peace and unity, but this mission requires the collective effort of all citizens and institutions. Ghana’s democracy is a shared treasure, and its preservation is a shared responsibility. Let wisdom, justice, and peace guide us in this critical period and beyond. Together, we shall continue to build a Ghana that stands tall as a beacon of hope and progress for all of Africa," he concluded.
Torgbiga Amenya Fiti V's admonition underscores the importance of prioritizing the peace and stability of our beloved country over personal or partisan interests. His call for collective efforts from all citizens, political actors, and other stakeholders to consolidate Ghana's peace is in the right direction and could not have come at a better time.
