Let the creating of Assin South District unite us- Assin citizens told

Assin Nsuaem-Kyekyewere (C/R) Nov. 10, GNA- President John Agyekum Kufuor on Tuesday said the creation of new district to accelerate development, especially in the rural areas should foster unity and co-operation among the people rather than bring disunity among them. He therefore, appealed to citizens of the newly created Assin South district in the Central Region to unite and mobilise all human and material resources in the area for an effective and efficient utilisation of resources that would be provided by the central government to the district to improve the socio-economic development of the area.

"We should all have the patience, unite and devote ourselves to develop the area for our benefit, especially the youth", he added. President Kufuor was addressing a durbar of the chiefs and people of the new district at Assin Nsuaem/Kyekyewere as part of his tour of the Central Region.

He expressed appreciation to the sterling leadership shown by the two paramount chiefs in the area who attended the durbar and asked the people to emulate the unity and co-operation shown by the chiefs. The chiefs were Nana Tsibu Asare II, Omanhene of Assin Atandansu traditional area and Nana Kwame Nkyi, Omanhene of Assin Apemanin traditional area.

President Kufuor asked the people to renew the mandate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to continue with the implementation of policies and programmes to develop the country and the area.

Nana Tsibu Asare commended the government for creating the new district that would promote and enhance development in the area. He said the new district capital was appropriate and easily accessible to all major towns in the district.

Nana Asare called for peaceful, free and fair election on December 7. Addressing another durbar of the chiefs and people of the Assin North district at Assin Foso, President Kufuor assured the people that the water project at Assin Dawumanko that had been abandoned since 1972 would be rehabilitated.

He said the rehabilitation formed part of a seven million pounds sterling assistance provided by the Department For International Development (DFID) of Britain to improve water systems in the country. President Kufuor said the government had already allocated one billion cedis from the HIPC Funds to begin work on the rehabilitation of the Assin Dawumanko water project.

He assured the people that electricity would be extended to the area from Assin Asempaneye to improve on the power supply. President Kufuor said other facilities that would be provided for the area include a hospital, communication facilities and rehabilitation of the roads at the district capital.

Nana Dr Okumanin Obiri Yeboah, paramount chief of Effutuakwa traditional area commended the government for the improvement in the socio-economic development in the country. However, he said problems in the area that required assistance from the government were rehabilitation of the abandoned Assin Dawumanko water project, intermittent power supply, communication facilities and a better health care facility.
