In a significant move to bolster security and ensure vibrant celebrations, the Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, has installed 450 new streetlights across the constituency ahead of the annual Ngmayem Festival.
The project, which spans numerous communities, is designed to enhance nighttime visibility, deter criminal activity, and ensure the safety of both residents and the influx of visitors expected for the festival. Okletey Terlabi, who also serves as the Deputy Minister for the Interior, emphasized that community security is a paramount priority.
In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb journalist Eric Obeng Boateng, the MP detailed the motivation behind the initiative.
"The Ngmayem Festival is a time of joy, community, and cultural display, with many activities extending into the night," Okletey Terlabi stated.
"This initiative aims to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors throughout the festive period. Well-lit streets are a fundamental deterrent to crime and will provide a secure environment for everyone to enjoy the celebrations."
The installation of the 450 light pieces addresses a longstanding concern from constituents about dark spots and poor visibility on major roads and community squares after dusk.
The enhanced lighting is expected to not only aid in security but also stimulate nighttime economic activities and improve general traffic safety.
The Ngmayem Festival, celebrated by the Krobo people, is a harvest festival that commemorates the migration and history of the people while giving thanks for the year's bounty.
It typically features a packed schedule of events, including a grand durbar of chiefs, traditional dances, feasting, and fireworks, many of which occur in the evening.
Residents have begun to express their appreciation for the project, with many noting the immediate improvement in the ambiance and security of their neighbourhoods.
Community leaders have praised the MP's timely intervention, stating that it reflects a direct response to the needs of the people.
With the streets now brightly lit, the Lower Manya Krobo constituency is poised to host a safer, more secure, and brilliantly illuminated Ngmayem Festival for all to enjoy.
