Kumasi, Feb 26, GNA - Alhaji Muntaka M. Mubarak, the Member of Parliament for Asawasie has, within one year, supplied 720 dual desks to 22 basic schools in his constituency.

He said 300 more of such dual desks would be supplied to five other schools in the constituency.

The supply of dual desks is being carried out under Alhaji Mubarak's constituency development programme and funded from various sources including funds from the MP's Common Fund. Other sources of funding are the GETFund, the HIPC utilization fund and donations from groups abroad.

Alhaji Mubarak said this when he formally launched the Asawase monthly constituency progress celebration in Kumasi on Saturday. The progress celebration programme involves inter electoral area football gala, inter schools quiz, blood donation, eye screening and free medical care.

The essence of the programme is not only to celebrate the progress so far made over the past one year but also serve as a platform for bringing the people together as one big family irrespective of political leanings, religion and ethnic grouping.

He said even though he is mandated to facilitate development of the constituency, his present focus is how to improve and develop education and make it more attractive to children in his constituency. He said apart from the supply of dual desks, it is part of his agenda to ensure that a community library was established so as to encourage school children and members of the community to read wide. Alhaji Mubarak said all the investment made in education might come to naught if parents did not ensure that their children were enrolled and retained in schools.

He said progress of the Asawase Constituency would depend largely on the level of education of the people and for that matter he would not relent in his drive at ensuring that quality education is brought to the doorsteps of the children.
