The Member of Parliament for Agona West, Mr Charles Obeng-Inkoom, has expressed grave concern about poor sanitation at basic schools and other public places in the Municipality.

He said it is sad that some people defecated indiscriminately at school compounds, classrooms and on streets, especially the outskirts of towns and villages that posed health risk.

The MP made this known when he handed over five modern toilets facilities to five basic schools at separate functions at Agona Abodom.

Beneficiary schools included Abodom Anglican, Agona Kwamang Anglican, Lower Bobikuma Anglican and Agona Nkum Presbyterian.

The projects were financed from his share of the Common Fund.

At Nkum, a School Feeding kitchen constructed by the Agona West Municipal Assembly was also jointly commissioned by the MP and Mr Samuel Oppong, Agona West Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).

The MP said to reduce the indiscriminate defecating in schools and other public places, he had decided to construct modern toilet facilities for at least 90 percent of all public schools in the constituency.

He appealed to the School Management Committees (SMC), Parents Teachers Associations (PTA) and other stakeholders in education, to take proper care of the facilities.

The MP urged he pupils and students to study hard to enable them become responsible adults.

He asked the school children to desist from thronging to funeral grounds, and urged parents to control their wards.

Mr Oppong called on the teachers not to drink during school hours, because it was against the rules and regulations of the Ghana Education Service GES).

He said the Assembly had started constructing teachers’ bungalows in schools, to help ease accommodation problems confronting teachers, especially those posted to rural areas.

Mr Oppong said the Assembly had procured 100 boxes of chalk for schools in the Municipality, to reduce the burden on the head teachers purchasing the item.

Mr Steve Amoah, Agona West Municipal Director Education, commended the MP and MCE for their numerous efforts to ensure quality teaching and learning in the area.

He assured them that the facilities would be taken proper care of, to prolong their life span.

Mr Amoah appealed to the MP and MCE to provide classrooms and other teaching materials for schools in the area.
