The Member of Parliament for the Navrongo Central Constituency, Joseph Kofi Adda, has made a cheque donation of ?30,000 from his MP’s Common Fund to Our Lady of Seven Sorrows Minor Basilica in Navrongo.
The donation is in fulfillment of a pledge the MP made to the church in December 2017, to support the completion of the new church building which has been under construction for over 10 years.
The MP’s Common Fund which legality has been questioned by Civil Society groups, including IMANI Africa, is 4% of a district’s allocation of the District Assembly Common Fund given to the MPs for development projects that are directly under their control.
But Mr. Adda, who is also the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources has used part of his money to redeem a pledge he made on behalf of his family.
On December 10, 2017, a local reporter in Navrongo reported, the MP made the pledged on behalf of his family who had joined parishioners for a thanksgiving mass after the funeral of the MP’s late mother.
The thanksgiving mass coincided with the annual harvest of the church which targeted ?60,000 for the completion of the new church building.
Kofi Adda has also situated one of 10 modern toilets that he is reportedly constructing in the municipality at the church.
The Our lady of Seven Sorrow Minor Basilica in Navrongo undertook a project to construct a new church building over 10 years ago and every year, there is an annual fundraising to complete the church.
Meanwhile, a library projected which was started in 2007 by the minister for the community has been abandoned and engulfed by filth.
