MP donates 44 million cedis to 88 students

Accra, Feb. 17, GNA - Mrs Gladys Ashitey, Deputy Minister of Health, on Friday presented cheques worth 44 million cedis to 88 brilliant but needy students from the Member of Parliament's share of the District Assemblies' Common Fund. The students, who received 500,000 cedis each, were selected from 17 junior secondary schools from the Ledzokuku Constituency in Accra based on their performance during the Basic Education Certificate Examinations in 2005.

Mrs Ashitey said this would support the students to access and complete their education in senior secondary schools and also encourage other students to study hard in order to benefit from the fund. She said "the Government has one of its policy bedrocks, human resource development and this can only be achieved if the majority of our children are able to access and complete their education". Mrs Ashitey appealed to parents to cease interfering unnecessarily in the administration of schools, since such acts caused indiscipline in schools.

"It is unfortunate that some parents and teachers sometimes supported students who defy school authorities. It works best when the key players, that is parents and teachers work to develop and enforce a clear code of conduct", she said.

She, therefore, called on both parties to support the Government's campaign for greater discipline in order to eradicate indiscipline in all forms from the society.

Mr B.C. Asamoah, Director of Education, advised parents of beneficiary students to divert the MPs support into productive ventures to improve on their living conditions. He said parents should desist from buying expensive funeral clothes and redirect their focus to ensuring better education for their children since education was the key to national development.
