MP institutes annual quiz competition for basic schools

Cape Coast, June 19, GNA - The Member of Parliament (MP) for Cape Coast, Mr Ebo Barton-Odro, has instituted an annual quiz competition for public basic schools in the Cape Coast Metropolis. The Administrative Officer at the office of the MP, Mr Oduah Sampson said the competition was part of the MP's measures to redeem fallen educational standards in the area.

The maiden competition for Primary and Junior High Schools (JHS), which recently was held under the auspices of the regional branch of the Ghana Education Service (GES), saw competing schools being grouped into six circuits.

The circuits were Cape Coast, Pedu-Abura, Aboom, OLA, Bakaano and Efutu and subjects covered included English language, mathematics and integrated science.

For the primary division, the Ghana National Basic School topped the Cape Coast Circuit with 47 points, Pedu M/A 'B' topped the Pedu-Abura Circuit with 47 points, St. Nicholas topped the Aboom Circuit with 46 points, OLA Presby came first with 45 points in the OLA Circuit, Wesley Girl's Basic School had 32 points and was adjudged the best among the Bakaano Circuit while Mpeasem A.M.E Zion School also topped the Efutu Circuit with 32 points.

At the JHS level, Reverend Alec Jones Memorial School was first with 57 points in the Cape Coast Circuit, St. Monica's Girl's JHS topped the Aboom Circuit with 55.5 points, Pedu M/A 'A' came first with 47 points in the Pedu-Abura Circuit, Wesley Girl's Basic School bagged 39 points to place first in the Bakaano Circuit, with OLA Catholic Girls topping the OLA Circuit with 38 points while Kubease M/A came first with 32 points in the Efutu Circuit.

The champion of champions of the competition slated early next month would be among the schools that topped their circuits. Quiz masters of the various competitions lauded the initiative and advised the students not to only study to score high grades in the competitions, but to also focus on passing their examination. Mr Sampson later told the Ghana News Agency that the MP, who is also the Deputy Minister of Justice and Attorney General, had initiated the establishment of an ultra modern science resource center for students in the Metropolis.

He said the MP had also organized extra classes for BECE candidates and mock examinations for final year JHS students. 19 June 10
