Sawla, Sept. 6, GNA - Mr. Dery Sorditey, Member of Parliament for Sawla-Tuna-Kalba has presented 5,500 assorted reading and textbooks to the Ghana Education Service in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District for distribution to various schools in the district at a ceremony held in Sawla within the week.
They covered areas including mathematics, science, computer, business, accounting and all other areas of study ranging from the tertiary, the junior secondary, and the primary schools Presenting the books, the MP noted that they valued over 150,000,000 cedis and were donation from Ghana Outlook, a US non-governmental organization based in Ho in the Volta Region, and that, 8,000,000 from his share of the common fund had been used to transport the books from Ho to Sawla and urged all schools in the district to form reading clubs to maximize the use of the books donated and to improve on the children's reading skills.
Receiving the books, the District Director of Education, Mr. Lawrence Badu, commended the MP for his initiative in securing the books for his people, and assured him that the books will be distributed equitably to all schools in the area, which he said will go a long way to improve on reading habits of school children in the district. The District Chief Executive, Mr James Kipo Sunyazi, who was present at the function, thanked the MP for his continuous support to education in the district through the use of his common fund, and urged all beneficiary schools to utilize the books effectively to promote teaching and learning and to organize reading competitions to improve on the children's reading skills.
At a separate function held in Sawla, five Hyundai 125Y motorcycles supplied by the Ghana Education Service were presented to beneficiary circuit supervisors on hire purchase at the cost of 7.5 million cedis and registered the appreciation of the district for the motorbikes, and reiterated that they will be used to improve on supervision of teaching and learning in the district.
The District Chief Executive, Mr Kipo Sunyazi also thanked the Ghana Education Service for making available the motorbikes and disclosed that the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Assembly was instituting an award scheme to honour hard working supervisors and other workers in the district.
