Alhaji Abukari Sumani, Member of Parliament for Choggu/ Tishigu, has presented twenty-five packets of roofing sheets worth 20 million cedis to five basic educational institutions in his constituency.
The presentation, which was made possible through the Ghana Education Trust Fund, (GETFUND) was to give relief to victims of the severe rainstorm that hit the Tamale Municipality recently and ripped off the roofs of the schools and destroyed properties valued at several millions of cedis.
The beneficiary schools are the Bagabaga Ridge Junior Secondary School which had 8 packets, Kunyevelu community school 5 packets, Taha, community school 2 packets, Damankum-yili school 2 packets and Wataniya JSS at Aboabo, 5 packets.
Presenting the roofing sheets the MP said he was moved by the plight of the pupils sitting under trees to study and therefore, contacted the GETFUND for assistance to re-roof the schools.
The MP also promised to use part of his common fund to improve upon the infrastructure of some of the schools in his constituency and also connect potable water and electricity to the Ridge JSS.
Mr. Abukari Sumani, the MP, appealed to the regional and municipal directorates of education to assist rehabilitate the Ridge JSS, which is immediately behind the Regional Education Office which, he described as an eyesore. Teachers at the Ridge JSS have their staff common room under nim trees.
Mr Yussif Baba Sochi, Headmaster of the school said the rainstorm ripped off five classroom blocks and as a result, 354 pupils are cramped into two classrooms.
