MPs call for calm at Teshie

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ledzokuku, Benita Sena Okity-Duah has appealed to feuding factions in the chieftaincy dispute at Teshie to resort to dialogue instead of violence.

The Ledzokuku MP made the appeal in a statement on the floor of parliament on Friday to call for peace in the Teshie area after two rival factions clashed over the installation of a chief on Thursday, which led to the death of one person and severe injuries to several other people in the process.

According to her, “Regardless of the differences in our opinions, it is important to note that the people of Teshie belong to one lineage and must at all times protect each other from any form of harm or brutalities.”

The MP said the people in the constituency should ensure that attacks would not be launched on any rival faction.

She called on all interested parties to make good use of the avenues earmarked for seeking redress when it comes to chieftaincy matters.

“I believe other relevant bodies and institutions will be more than willing to help find lasting solution to this dispute,” the MP noted.

She appealed to the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to ensure strict maintenance of law and order in the constituency and its environs so that lives and property would be protected.

He, however, commended the police personnel for their swift response to curbing the disturbance which helped to avert a major clash in the area.

The Deputy Minority Leader, Dominic Nitiwul, in a contribution, said the peace of Teshie is very paramount because it is an area where you see a lot of people from other tribes and also links Accra and Tema metropolis.

He, therefore, called on all factions to return to the negotiating table and resolve their differences so that they would be able to install a chief that would be acceptable to all factions in the chieftaincy dispute.

The Deputy Majority Leader, Alfred Kwame Agbesi, also supported the deputy minority leader’s call for eternal peace, saying the nation needs peace to develop.
