Tamale, July 8, GNA - MTN, the mobile communications giant, has distributed yellow packs or school bags to over 1,630 pupils in selected basic schools in the Tamale Metropolis.
It is under its basic schools foundation project aimed at improving access to quality education in schools in the Northern Region.
MTN Ghana Foundation launched the basic schools project in July 2009 with its project partner, AED-Ghana Centre for Education Development Evaluation and Management (CEDEM), with the objective of helping schools to access quality education.
The project involves a total sum of GHc 112,500.00. The school bags distributed to the pupils in the Tamale Metropolis cost GHc 15,000.00 and each contains an exercise book, crayons, erasers, pens and pencils.
The beneficiary schools include Choggu Demonstration, Shishiegu, St. Gabriel R/C, Tiyumba D/A and Vittin Ansuariyya Primary schools.
Mrs. Nabila Williams, Board Member of MTN Foundation in a speech read on her behalf at the presentation ceremony, said the project was aimed at improving teaching and learning in schools.
She said the Project had brought about an enrollment of nine percent increase in the beneficiary schools.
Mr. Stephen Manu, Executive Director of CEDEM, appealed to parents to buy at least one supplementary reader for their children in order to inculcate in them the habit of reading.
Mr San Nasamu Asabigi, Deputy Northern Regional Minister commended MTN for complementing government's efforts in providing quality education for school pupils.
