MTN to the rescue of Odumase/Assuminamu Basic School

The staff of MTN Ghana have marked the “21 days of Y’ello Care” with a sod-cutting ceremony to construct a three-unit classroom block for the pupils of Wassa Odumase/Assuminamu Basic School.

Speaking at the ceremony in the Wassa East District of the Western Region., Mr. Laud Nii Armah, the Acting Regional Senior Manager of MTN, stated that the MTN Y’ello Care was celebrated annually in all the 22 countries it was operating in, with social services.

He said the company examined the pressing needs of various communities within its operational areas and mobilised its staff to undertake various projects as part of their corporate social responsibility.

He said the Odumase/Assuminamu Basic School was chosen due to its deplorable nature.

Mr Armah reiterated that education was an indispensable tool for the development of every community and the nation at large, hence the company deemed it appropriate to support the cause of education in every community to enhance the quality of teaching and learning.

He noted that as part of the Y’llow Care in the Western Region, MTN had already organised training programme on basic record keeping for market women, traders and head potters (Kayayie) at the Takoradi Central Market in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.

He said the staff would also donate computers to the Tarkwa Senior High School and construct and refurbish an ICT centre for the Assin-Fosu College of Education to enhance the teaching and learning of Information and Communication Technology at the college.

The headteacher of the school, Mr. Amu Gyimah Ebo, said the project had come at an opportune time, since the school usually suspended classes any time it rained.

He said this often disrupted instructional hours and negatively affected the performance of pupils at the Basic Education Certificate Examination and other external quiz competitions.

The Chief of Wassa Odumase, Nana Kweku Damoah I, commended MTN for its efforts in improving educational facilities in the area, and pledged the support and cooperation of the people.

Miss Linda Korankye, the head prefect of the School, said the structure, upon completion, would create a congenial atmosphere for teaching and learning and expressed her profound gratitude to MTN for the kind gesture.

A resident of Assuminamu, Madam Hannah Essel, praised MTN and said that the facility would enable their wards to attend school in the town, instead of they trekking long distances to nearby communities, which often posed danger to them.
