President John Dramani Mahama has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to set aside one day in every month to undertake a general clean-up exercise.

He reminded all that that will not be a new exercise in the history of the country.

President Mahama gave the directive over the weekend when he joined the Greater Accra Region Minister and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly Chief Executive to carry out a clean-up exercise in the capital.

Their first stop was at Akoto Lantey in the Odododiodio Constituency, where they were joined by Parliament Member Nii Lantey Vanderpuye.

The capital has recently been engulfed in filth, which has resulted in high cases of cholera.

So far, over 5,000 cases have been reported in Accra with a few cases in other regional capitals.

Speaking to residents in Ga, President Mahama asked Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to ensure that the directive is strictly adhered to.

On that day no trader will open shops, President Mahama added.

He asked MMDCEs to collaborate with traditional rulers in undertaking such an exercise.

President Mahama also promised free dustbins to households in the Greater Accra Region, adding that the first batch of dustbins will be distributed “from next week."

“So please when you get the dustbins use them and put everything into [them].”
