Demands for all schools to be disable friendly have been made by participants of a one day workshop on the role of government and civil society organizations in education delivery.
According to them, many physically challenged children are unable to attend school just because they cannot access the classrooms with high verandas and steep steps.
The workshop, held in Tema and organized by IDAY Ghana, and Abibimman Foundation, discussed how to engage and contribute to national and global processes to finding solutions challenges in education delivery.
In a 23-point communiqué adopted at the end of the workshop, the participants who were drawn from the media, schools, and CSOs among others, requested that children with special needs should be identified and given special attention or sent to special schools in order to successfully be able to transition themselves into society when they reach adulthood.
They called for counselling units to be established in schools to help deal with most of the social vices affecting the students while teachers are motivated to enhance effective teaching and learning.
It said more schools should be built with appropriate facilities to reduce over in public schools and to enhance student participation and teachers monitored during school hours.
They called for an end to the shift system to enhance quality education adding that there was the need for practical lessons to enhance effective teaching and participation during lessons.
One participant said there was the need to stock all school libraries with modern books and other educative materials and it was crucial for teachers to use simple language when teaching for the understanding of the students to have any effective educational system.
Participants called for the effective implementation of the School Feeding Programme because currently the food served is not nutritious in most cases.
The communiqué added they wanted a research centre to be established in all schools to enhance revision of the school syllabus.
