Make teaching your career- Deputy Minister

Amedzofe, (V/R) July 4, GNA - Newly trained teachers have been implored to make teaching their career rather than as a transition to other careers.

"Whether you believe it or not, education is in such a state of flux today that those who choose a career in teaching will find it interesting and rewarding."

Mrs. Angelina Baiden-Amissah, deputy Minister of Education and Sports made this point at the induction of new teachers of the Amedzofe Training College on Sunday under the theme: "Breaking New Grounds in Teacher Education".

She said the transformation of Teacher Training colleges into Diploma awarding institutions, the planned introduction of Information Communication Technology (ICT) into teacher training and the four-year school-based in-service programmes for untrained teachers, leading to the award of diploma in Basic Education are some of the pointers to the new outlook to teaching in the country.

Mrs Baiden-Amissah urged the new teachers to "aim at developing those qualities of personality, competence and character that would provide lasting and inspiring examples to our pupils".

The Right Reverend Dr. Livingstone Buama, Moderator of the EP Church, Ghana who performed the induction ceremony asked them to accept postings to wherever they might be sent.

"Some postings are difficult, but if you follow Christ, things would change for the better for you", he assured.

Right Rev. Dr. Buama recalled that on completing his teacher training at Akropong many years ago, "I drew the map of Ho district and put a padlock on Adaklu but as destiny would have it, I was posted to Adaklu-Waya and today I owe what I am to Adaklu," he testified. "There would be conflicts and hostilities wherever you may find yourselves but with Christ you would overcome," he said.

In all, 121 new teachers, comprising of 50 women and 71 men were commissioned.
