Firefighters battling the fire
The Ghana National Fire Service has announced that the fire which gutted some shops at Zongo Lane in Accra has finally been extinguished.
This announcement was made by the National Fire Service on its official Facebook handle on September 7, 2024.
“Breaking news, Makola Zongo Lane fire finally extinguished. More details later. Kudos to all firefighters for a good job done,” the post read.
The fire, which began on September 1, 2024, had swept through the commercial area in Accra's Central Business District, leaving significant destruction in its wake.
The blaze reportedly started in a small shop around 9:40 am and quickly spread to neighbouring shops, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky.
Various goods including clothing, electronics, and other goods were reduced to ashes as the fire rapidly engulfed the area.
Firefighters arrived promptly and, after a prolonged struggle, managed to bring the flames under control.
However, due to the state of the buildings which were engulfed, firefighters were unable to enter to complete the process.
Two days after the outbreak, portions of the building which caught fire collapsed.
After 7 days of non-stop battle, the fire has finally been extinguished.
However, the damage was extensive, with multiple shops destroyed.
Initial reports indicate that the fire's rapid spread was due to the combustible nature of the items in the shop, which also affected the wooden tailoring shops behind the building.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but the Ghana National Fire Service has launched an investigation into the incident.
