Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, has called for national unity and mutual understanding among Ghanaians as Muslims across the country mark this year’s Eid al-Fitr.

Contributing to a statement on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, March 19, 2026, the legislator emphasized the importance of unity, noting that the occasion presents a timely opportunity to foster togetherness among citizens.

“Mr Speaker, there couldn’t have been a better time for a statement inspiring unity amongst the people of this Republic,” he said.

“Mr Speaker, none of you is a true believer of Islam unless you desire for your brother or sister what you desire for yourself. It is very instructive and a useful lesson that we don’t wish for others what we do not wish for ourselves,” he stated.

Awuah further noted that Eid-ul-Fitr holds special significance for him due to the sizeable Muslim population in his constituency, particularly in the Afia Kobi Electoral Area, popularly known as Alabar.

“Mr Speaker, Eid is a very important moment for me because my constituency has a significant Muslim population, especially at the Afia Kobi Electoral Area,” he added.

He extended warm wishes to Muslims within his constituency and beyond, saying, “Mr Speaker, I wish Muslims in my constituency a happy Eid.”

The MP also used the occasion to offer prayers for Muslims who lost their lives during the fasting period.

“Mr Speaker, I wish to pray that all those who lost their lives in the course of the fasting, may the good Lord receive them into the bosom of Abraham,” he prayed.

In an emotional tribute, the legislator recounted a personal experience during Ramadan, revealing the sudden passing of a close associate. According to him, he joined some Muslim friends in the Afia Kobi Electoral Area for the breaking of the fast on a Sunday, only to receive tragic news the following morning.

“In my constituency in a fine Sunday I decided to break the fast with some of my Muslim friends at Afia Kobi Electoral Area, one of the gentleman, a polling station chairman and a unit committee member, a very good friend of mine who was part of the event that day but unfortunately the next dawn we were informed of his demise, his name Abubakar Sadick,” he disclosed.

The statement underscored the spirit of compassion, unity, and reflection that defines Eid-ul-Fitr, while reminding Ghanaians of the need to support one another in both joyful and difficult times.
