Twenty farmers in Asante-Akim South District have been honoured at the 30th farmers’ day celebration at Kumeso, for their hard work and distinguished contribution to the growth of agriculture.

They were presented with various prizes, including bicycles, wheelbarrows, knapsack sprayers, wellington boots and cutlasses.

Dr Steve Ogbordjor, a private medical practitioner, won the ultimate and received a motorbike, two knapsack sprayers, radio set, cutlasses and pair of wellington boots.

This year’s celebration was on the theme: “Eat what you grow.”

Dr Ogbordjor, who operates the First Klass Hospital at Konongo, has a 10- acre cocoa farm, cultivated six acres of pineapple, five acres of cassava, two acres of cocoyam, five acres of maize and three acres of beans.

Besides he has a livestock farm and fishpond.

Mr. De-graft Fokuo, District Chief Executive, commended the farmers and assured them that the government would continue to introduce interventions to better their lives.

He announced that the district assembly has earmarked GH¢ 70,000 towards the improvement of feeder roads in the area to make it easier for the evacuation of farm produce to marketing centres.

He asked the farmers to adopt improved farming methods to boost crop yield.

Dr Ogbordjor appealed to the government to support farmers with farming inputs at subsidised rates.
