Melcom Group supports Millennium Marathon

Organizers of the Millennium Marathon International Race in Ghana have received nine digital television sets from the Melcom Group of Companies for presentation to winners of the Nine Regional Marathons ahead of the event on Saturday.

The items also included 30 cartons of Melcom Nsu Pa mineral water for refreshing competitors.

The brain behind the presentation is the Chairman of the Melcom Group of Companies, Mr Bhagwan Khubchadani.

Speaking at the presentation on Monday in Accra, Mr Godwin Avenorgbo, the Director, Melcom Group of Companies, said, Melcom Care, the charity wing of the group by its very nature is about charity, support and giving back to society.

He said Melcom for its love for sports and Melcom Care for its spirit of giving could not be left out of this event.

“We are in this for the good of the people of Ghana because we are proud of Ghanaians for their support for our business enterprise. Not one, not two, not three, not four but five subsidiaries are meeting needs and generating employment across the length and breadth of Ghana,” he said.

“Earlier this year we donated trophies towards the promotion of sports and academic excellence to selected nursery, primary and junior high schools,” he added.

He said the global marathon event would give Ghana an indelible mark on the world sports calendar, rejuvenate the Ghanaian interest in mass sporting events, and create a platform for a mass keep fit movement in an effort to build a healthy nation.

He said the event would provide an opportunity to use the marathon to attract healthy and competitive sports tourists, use the numbers to generate growth in the hospitality, transport and other sectors of the economy.

Mr Ashim Morton, Managing Partner of the Millennium Marathon expressed his gratitude to the Melcom Group for the kind gesture.

He announced that the Millennium Marathon International Race in Ghana would commerce at 0600 hours on Saturday morning, September 05, at the Independence Square in Accra.

The outline route include: Black Star Square, Labadi Road, Trade Fair Road, Burma Camp Road, Elwak Stadium, 37th Military Hospital Road, Independence Avenue Road, National Theatre, Liberation Road, (Trades Union Congress), Kwame Nkrumah Avenue Road (Rawlings Park), WATO Road, High Street and back to Black Star Square.

Mr Seth Osei-Agyen, the Director of Sports, Ministry of Youth and Sports, said sports could be used as a tool to bring about social inclusion.

He said the Ministry would continue to collaborate with all stakeholders to promote sports in the country.

Mr Samuel Aryee, the Director of Finance at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly urged residents to help keep the city clean.
