Over the years, most young girls especially in the rural areas resort to the use of toilet rolls, leaves among others as sanitary towels during menstruation to get them going about their daily duties in the day.
As the world celebrates Menstrual Hygiene Day today, some Ghanaians have called on the government to freely distribute sanitary pads to young girls.
According to them, most young girls are not financially stable to afford sanitary towels every month; this they added causes discomfort to these young girls.
They reiterated that, menstruation is a part of women and during that time of the month, women must feel comfortable by putting on sanitary towels, tampons or menstrual cups to avoid soiling their dresses.
One of the young women who spoke to GhanaWeb asserted that “sanitary towels should be made free because a lot of women, young girls are unable to afford it. I won't say girls in the rural areas because even in the urban centers, a lot of young girls are unable to afford to buy a sanitary towel so so I think it should be made free for women".
