The Microcredit Association of Ghana (MCAG) has refurbished the mental health unit of the Koforidua regional hospital in the eastern region.
The renovation of the unit forms part of activities of the 10th anniversary and the Annual General Meeting of the MCAG this year.
The decision to give it a facelift, according to the executive secretary of Microcredit Association of Ghana, Ebenezer Quartey is to ensure that persons who visit the facility for mental health care will receive the best of health care in a conducive environment.
He stated that the association saw the need to refurbish the facility due to the many challenges it faced, which includes inadequate space area for healthcare delivery.
Speaking at the official opening of the renovated unit, the head of the hospital Dr Kwame Anim Boamah revealed that many people who commit suicide can be linked to mental health issues.
He, therefore, saw the need for people to avail themselves for regular mental health checks.
The association, as part of opening of the renovated mental unit, also donated bags of rice, sugar, loaves of bread toiletries among other things.
The donation, according to the Board chairperson of the Microcredit Association of Ghana, Regina Kumi said the gesture is to supplement the food stock of the mental health unit.
