Samahu (W/R), July 14, GNA - The Minister of Education and Sports, Mr. Yaw Osafo-Maafo on Thursday said all new school buildings should be wired in anticipation of the provision of electricity. He said it would be too costly to construct new school buildings without the necessary electrical works.
Mr. Osafo-Maafo said these when he visited the Richard Graeme basic school at Samahu near Tarkwa. He said the Ministry would soon develop standard specifications for all school buildings to make them meet the desired needs of the future. The Minister said without the necessary infrastructure, education would suffer while government's plan to make ICT a central part of basic education would fail.
Pupils of the Entoada primary school also near Tarkwa, was among the most deprived in the Wassa West District. Most of the over 60 pupils used benches in the classrooms and had no writing desks.
Only two teachers were at post and handling classes one to six. Mr Pascal Hemans, Headteacher of the school said, though he lives at Bogoso about seven kilometres away, he travels by bicycle to the school daily. He told the Minister that to ensure that the pupils are taught daily, some of the classes have been merged since only two teachers are at post while the third is on study leave.
