Alhaji Collins Dauda, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development has tasked metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) to ensure the success of the up-coming National Sanitation Day (NSD) exercise.

He warned that any MMDAs which fail to organise the NSD in their jurisdiction would be reported to the President for the appropriate sanctions against the chief executives.

Speaking at a news briefing in Accra on the second phase of the NSD, Alhaji Dauda urged traditional authorities to partner government representatives in their traditional areas to ensure that the NSD achieves its target.

He said the ministry has ended its campaign for citizen participation nationwide and the regional coordinating councils headed by Regional Ministers are now tasked to ensure the sustenance of the project.

The Minister who is also the Member of Parliament for Asutifi South said officials of the ministry would pay surprised visits to some MMDAs on every NSD schedule date to access the level of participation and seriousness.

This he said is to allow proper monitoring and assessment in the MMDAs which the regional minister could easily visit and make a report for the appropriate sanctions against any MMDAs which flout the directives.

He said the NSD was instituted at the instance of President John Dramani Mahama and at no circumstances should any MMDAs be discouraged.

The NSD was instituted to instilled the culture of communal labour and volunteerism in Ghanaians and stop the indiscriminate dumping of refuse and littering.

It is also to control the outbreak of diseases and also promote environmental and public health.

The NSD is scheduled to take place on the first Saturday of every month.
