Wa, Nov. 16, GNA - Mr. Kwadwo Baah-Wiredu, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports on Tuesday called for collaboration between the Regional Sports Councils and the Sports Unit of the Ghana Education Service by initiating and organising joint sporting activities at the regional and district levels.

By so doing, he said, it would place them in a position to unearth budding sporting talents as well as promote and develop sports. The Sports Minister, who is on a four-day tour of the Upper West Region, made this suggestion when he addressed the staff of the Wa Office of the Regional Sports Council at Wa.

Mr. Baah-Wiredu urged the two bodies to work together in identifying persons who have, in diverse ways contributed to the development and promotion of sports in the towns and villages for consideration for honour under the hall of fame scheme.

He mentioned, in particular managers of sports, sportsmen and women as well as organisers as those who should be recommended.

Mr. Baah-Wiredu called on the Regional Sports Councils to be consistent in organising sporting events saying that, this is the only way they could maintain the interest and enthusiasm of the people in sports.

The Minister hinted that Ghana is lobbying to host the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

Briefing the Minister earlier, Mr. Thomas L. Saanye, the Regional Sports Development Officer said apart from himself, the office has no other technical man, and called for this situation to be addressed. He said as a result, he has to depend on sports teachers in the districts to help for an allowance of 15,000 cedis.
