The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection on Wednesday celebrated with Auntie Maud Hammond as she turned 100.
Nana Oye Lithur, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection told Auntie Maud as she is affectionately called that, the Ministry visited her in her house to say “ayeeko” for all she has done for mother Ghana.
Auntie Maud was crowned Miss Accra at the age of 20 years, which was a very enviable title then. She started her early education at Sister Rose Boarding school in Accra and later in life taught at the St. Mary’s School in Accra. She moved on to Adisadel College as a Matron from 1954 to 1957.
She was an active member of the Accra Women’s Association, the Guild of the Good Shepherd, Young Women’s Christian Association and Mother’s Union of the St. Augustine Anglican Church at Dansoman.
From 1971 to 1976 she became the Chief Commissioner for the Ghana Girls Guides Association through hard work and determination.
The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection being a Women’s machinery responsible for the promotion and protection of children, women, elderly and the vulnerable in society therefore paid a special visit to Auntie Maud and congratulated her for her resilience, bravery, hard work and determination in raising high the Flag of Ghana and making Ghana a better place for us all, Nana Oye the leader of the team said.
She said that the protection and promotion of the welfare of the aged was a priority for government and that had necessitated the re-alignment of the Ministry.
The Ministry organized a party for Auntie Maud and gave her gift items.
A Choir named the Jesus and Mary Youth choir was invited to sing for her.
