The Member of Parliament for Mion Constituency, Misbahu Mahama Adams, has called for a united national effort to protect the environment and address the growing threat of climate change as Muslims across Ghana observe the holy month of Ramadan.

Delivering a statement in Parliament, the lawmaker expressed concern over the environmental challenges confronting communities, particularly the intense heat being experienced in parts of Northern Ghana. He said the situation highlights the urgent need for stronger environmental protection measures and climate resilience strategies.

Adams noted that the ongoing heatwave serves as a clear indication of the increasing impact of climate change on livelihoods and public health.

He explained that while Muslims are observing a period of fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection, many residents in northern communities are also contending with unusually high temperatures, making daily activities and the fasting period more challenging.

According to him, the harsh weather conditions reinforce the need for sustained environmental stewardship and proactive climate action from both government and citizens.

The Mion legislator stressed that safeguarding the environment is not only a civic responsibility but also a moral and religious obligation. He noted that Islamic teachings place significant emphasis on caring for nature and preserving the earth for future generations.

Adams cited the teachings of Muhammad, which encourage environmental preservation, including tree planting and responsible use of natural resources.

He explained that actions that contribute to the wellbeing of people, animals, and the environment are considered acts of charity in Islamic teachings.

The MP therefore urged Parliament, government institutions, civil society organisations, and communities to intensify environmental conservation initiatives. These include large-scale tree planting programmes and the adoption of sustainable land management practices.

According to him, such efforts would help mitigate the effects of climate change, improve livelihoods, and protect vulnerable communities from extreme weather conditions.

Adams also used the opportunity to extend Ramadan greetings to Muslims across the country and encouraged them to observe the holy month with devotion, compassion, and mindfulness of their health.

He advised those fasting to take precautions to avoid dehydration and heat-related illnesses during the period of extreme heat.

The MP recommended that Muslims maintain adequate hydration between Iftar

the breaking of the fast at sunset and Suhoor, the pre-dawn meal. He also encouraged limiting prolonged exposure to the sun and reducing strenuous activities during peak heat hours.

Additionally, he urged fasting individuals to consume nutritious meals, including fruits and water-rich foods, to help maintain energy levels throughout the day.

Adams further called on citizens to use the Ramadan period as a time to reflect on humanity’s relationship with the environment and to commit to actions that promote sustainability and environmental protection.

He stressed that protecting the environment remains essential for securing a healthy and sustainable future for generations to come.
