Miss Bonsu wins 2007 B/A J.S.S Girls Science Competition

Nkoranza (B/A), July 4, GNA- Mr. Kwame Ampofo-Twumasi, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Sports, has urged girls to take the study of science and mathematics seriously to enable them to acquire knowledge in science and technology.

He expressed worry that some girls disliked Science and Mathematics and said it was high time they allayed such phobia and developed interest in the subjects.

The Deputy Minister gave the advice when he presented 50 Ghana Cedis to Miss Helena Bonsu, a second year student of Nkoranza Girls' Model School for wining the 2007 science competition for Junior Secondary School girls (J.S.S) in the Brong-Ahafo Region, at Nkoranza. Mr. Ampofo-Twumasi, who is also Member of Parliament for Nkoranza South, called on teachers to encourage girls to take keener interest in science and mathematics subjects.

Mr. Kwabena Agyemang-Badu, the Nkoranza District Director of Education, thanked the Deputy Minister for his contribution to the development of education in the district.

The District Education Director commended Miss Bonsu for wining the contest and urged her colleagues to work hard to also achieve higher laurels.

Mr. Agyemang-Badu said the introduction of science, technology and mathematics education clinics by the Ghana Education Service to encourage students in basic schools to study the subjects should be sustained.

The girl will be expected to produce a science project work at a similar competition to be held in Accra.
