The Mobile Library Day has been held at Kanvili R/C School in the Sagnarigu Municipality of the Northern Region to celebrate mobile library services and highlight its impact on communities without a static library.

The celebration dubbed: “Reading for Progress,” was an initiative of the Ghana Library Authority (GhLA) as part of activities marking the Year of Reading, which focused on improving literacy and learning outcomes.

It was organised by the Northern Region Office of GhLA in collaboration with the Sagnarigu Municipal Assembly and the Sagnarigu Municipal Directorate of Education and featured personalities from public and private institutions, who read some books to pupils of the school to inculcate the habit of reading in them.

Madam Mariam Iddrisu, Municipal Chief Executive for Sagnarigu, who also read some of the books to the pupils of Kanvili R/C School on Monday, commended GhLA and the Sagnarigu Municipal Directorate of Education for their efforts to ensure equitable opportunities to all pupils and the public to have access to library.

Madam Iddrisu said the GhLA was expected to increase its number of libraries in the region and to digitise its system to meet modern standards as well as generate revenue.

She called on development partners and relevant stakeholders to support the GhLA to revisit past initiatives such as the Inter-Circuit Essay Competition, Reading Competitions and the National Youth Essay Competition to improve academic performance.

Madam Samata Mahama, Sagnarigu Municipal Director of Education advised all school heads to cooperate with the GhLA to derive the best benefits from the Mobile Library initiative appealing to government for a good library in the area.

Mr Aaron Kuwornu, Northern Regional Director of GhLA said the Mobile van was stocked with books from the head office and 10 laptops donated by Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications to equip the Mobile Library to serve schools with no access to computer.
