Model Schools to be set up in Volta Region

Ho, Aug. 1, GNA- Some selected primary and Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in the Volta Region are to be turned into Experimental Schools to serve as models to raise the standard of education in the Region.

Mr Samuel Donkor Gyang, Volta Regional Director the Ghana Education Service (GES) announced this at the inauguration of the Seven Garrison branch of the Ghana Armed Forces Teachers Association (7GAFTA) at the 66 Artillery Regiment barracks in Ho on Friday.

He said all Public School Units, including the various Church units would be involved in the programme under which the designated schools would be staffed with conscientious staff and provided with all facilities to enable them perform.

Mr Gyang said teachers could not escape the brunt of parents and other stakeholders in education over the inability of some basic school leavers "to read and write, much less spell their names".

He urged Executives of the Association to set up a disciplinary committee to sanction drunkenness while at work, non-preparation of notes and initiate expanded schemes.

The Director also mentioned laziness, loss of contact hours through absenteeism, child manual labour and other bad habits that the Association must fight against.

Mr Norbert Dzifa Adzasoo, President of the Association promised to maintain the position in academic standards in the region held by pupils of schools, whose teachers formed the Association.

Rev Emmanuel Bredzei, Head Pastor of the E.P Church of Ghana Mawuli Estates Ho, who inaugurated the eight-member executive, prayed for unity among members of the GAFTA.

Present were Lt Col Samuel Yanyi Akofur Commanding Officer of the 66 Artillery Regiment.

the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has organised a five-day promotion course for 36 teachers who are preparing for promotion to principal and assistant director's grade. Mr Baffour Asomaning, the district GNAT chairman, advised the teachers to be abreast with time by reading newspapers and listening to the radio.

Nana Boaten, an Assistant Director of Education, who was the facilitator, urged the teachers to improve their professional skills and have confidence for the task ahead.
