Atwedie (Ash), March 5, GNA - A heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds that swept through the Asante-Akim South District on Wednesday, ravaged many buildings displacing more than 700 people. The worst hit communities included Atwedie, Muramura, Asankare and Banka.
A teenage girl, Rose Anim, was injured in the rib by a flying object and has received treatment at the Juaso District Hospital. Mr De-Graft Fokuo, the District Chief Executive, has toured the affected communities to assess the extent of damage and what kind of immediate relief support to be given to the victims. He was accompanied by the District Coordinator of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Mr Agyemang Boadi and some other officials of the Assembly.
Some of the victims whose buildings were damaged were seen busily trying to fix them, while others stood confused and dejected. The DCE said the assembly would stand by them in their difficult moments. He drew attention to the need for the people to ensure regular maintenance of their houses and plant trees to serve as wind shield. Mr Boadi blamed the disaster on what he said was the indiscriminate cutting down of trees in the area. 5 March 10
