Akim-Tafo (E/R), May 26, GNA - The Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints also known as The Mamons on Thursday distributed 1,000 pairs of reading glasses to four communities in the New Juaben municipality of the Eastern Region as part of the church's humanitarian services.
The beneficiary communities were Oyoko, Jumapo, Osiem and New Tafo.
The West-Africa Area Public Affairs Director of the Church, Elder Whitesand who presented the glasses said, the church was committed to provide the basic needs of the less privileged in the society to enhance their living standards.
He explained that since reading was a necessity in all life's endeavours the church has decided to provide reading glasses to those who have problems with reading due to poor vision".
He said the church was community-based, aimed at improving the lot of people in the world, which Ghana had not been an exception and mentioned projects such as provision of portable water, employment resource centres and provision of food and other logistics to clinics as some of their contribution to uplift the image of the suffering.
According to Elder Whitesand, the church had so far provided 150 boreholes in the country and given basic training in reading and writing and computer skills to both members and non-members of the church at a free-cost to complement the effort of the government in alleviating poverty in the society.
He emphasized that, the church's many achievement in its commitment to the humanitarian purposes was as a result of the fact that the church had no pay-ministry or clergy and that every member of the church contributes in terms of funds and human resource.
He noted that Ghana had been at the centre of their humanitarian services and would continue to support the country until it had reached its height in development.
The beneficiary communities expressed gratitude to the church for the kind gesture to enable them to read their bibles and other materials, which they cannot do previously due to their poor vision and their inability to purchase the glasses as a result of poverty.
