Nkawie (Ash), Oct.4, GNA - A Ghana News Agency survey conducted on Monday in some basic schools in the Atwima Nwabiagya district showed that many teachers were absent from schools while their pupils were seen playing and loitering on the premises. In some schools, teachers who reported and signed the time book later left for their homes.

At Afari Presbyterian basic school, only six out of the 13 teachers who were present were seen sitting on the school corridor, while the pupils were left to their fate. At Nerebehi Roman Catholic primary school, 12 out of the 15 teachers had signed the time book but were not seen on the school premises and at the Junior Secondary (JSS), eight of the 12 teachers were present but effective classes were not held. Four out of the 16 teachers at Mim basic school were in school but the primary department was virtually closed down with few pupils loitering about on the compound. The classrooms of Abuakwa Roman Catholic primary school were locked with no teacher and pupils around and at Asenemaso JSS, some teachers and pupils were seen helping the residents in a communal labour on a school project.

Meanwhile, Mr Eddy Obeng-Darko, the Atwima Nwabiagya District Director of Education and a team of Assistant Directors of Education visited many schools in the district to monitor the activities of the teachers who were alleged to be on a sit down strike. Even though teaching and learning was not hectic in some schools, a few teachers were present and offering instructions and guidance to the pupils. Some school communities the team visited included Nkawie, Jankobaa, Nkawie Panin, Toase, Afari, Nerebehi, Sepaase, Mim, Abuakwa and Asenemaso. Oct. 04 05
