Bugri (U/E), July 7, GNA - The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has donated items to victims of the communal violence that erupted at Bugri near Bawku in April. The items, 70 student mattresses, 70 blankets, 20 maxi bags of rice, four cartons of cooking oil and 15 plastic buckets, were presented by Mr. Anderson Anafo-Nabia, Regional Co-ordinator of NADMO. Mr Anafo-Nabia said the donation was in response to an appeal made by the Regional Minister to NADMO during a recent visit to the area by Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyeman, the Interior Minister.
Mr Mahami Salifu the Regional Minister, said the government was concerned about peace and unity in the country and appealed to the people to co-exist peacefully to facilitate the socio-economic development of the area. He said they should desist from resorting to violence as a means of seeking redress since the constitution has provided many channels through which grievances could be lawfully resolved without disturbing public peace.
Mr Abdul-Rahman Gumah, the Bawku East District Chief Executive, reiterated an appeal to the residents of the area to exercise restraint and not to think of revenge since the law would not spare all those behind any heinous crime.
A misunderstanding over loading rights between two local rival groups of the Ghana Private road Transport Union (GPRTU) at Bugri last April escalated into the burning of 29 houses leading to the death of an elderly woman and the displacement of more than 500 people in the town.
