Kuntanase (Ash), Sept 3, GNA - The Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District Secretariat of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has embarked on a programme to mobilise the youth to form Disaster Volunteer Groups in communities.

Mr. Asuo Afram, District NADMO Coordinator who disclosed this said, the groups were not solely for the prevention or combating disasters, but should also venture into income generating activities to help solve the unemployment problem.

Mr. Afram was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Kuntanase on Friday, on programmes by NADMO to help ease the unemployment problem in the district.

He said NADMO had already succeeded in forming many Disaster Volunteer Groups, but only five had proved to be active, productive and viable.

The five groups were at Akokofe, Jachie, Brodekwano, Akosomo and Trede, he said Mr. Afram said they had already cultivated a 50-acre maize farm, intercropped with cassava, plantain and vegetables. He said part of the proceeds would be used to expand the project and the remaining amount shared among the members.

Mr. Afram explained that apart from training members of the groups in employable skills, NADMO would also assist them with seeds for planting, cutlasses and Wellington boots and ensure that they benefited from the "food for work" programme. 3 Sept 05
