Professor Linus Abraham, Rector of National Television Institute (NAFTI) on Friday said intake into the Institute has increased from 30 students in 2010 to 80 in the 2014/2015 academic year.
Prof Abraham who said this at the 16th matriculation ceremony of the Institute: said the number constitutes more than 300 per cent increase intake in 2010.
He said before 2010 the Institute was admitting just about 30 students annually and has made conscious efforts to try to increase the numbers.
He said the increase partly reflects NAFTI’s realisation of its responsibility to ensure that the media industry is filled with the appropriate expertise to enhance the development of the industry and the country as a whole.
Prof Abraham said beyond simply being a film and television institute NAFTI is transformed into a media and creative arts university that would better serve the ever growing convergences in the creative and media arts industry in the country.
Mr Edward Ato Sarpong, Deputy Minister of Communication said government is supporting the Institute with 35 million Euros to upgrade its studios with modern equipment and expand the facilities to admit more students and train more experts in the film industry.
He said: “We want to position NAFTI to take care of itself, we want to make it the best in West Africa.”
Prof Kofi Naidoo, Chairman of NAFTI Board of Directors called on students to carefully conceive stories that would tell the story of Ghanaians as a people.
Mr Kwaw Ansah, Chief Executive Officer of TV Africa, said there are a lot of relevant stories untold and with a powerful audio-visual media the students have the opportunity to tell stories that would help change the Ghanaian and for that matter the African situation.
