Hohoe, Aug 18, GNA - Ms Esther Modesta Sapaty, the Deputy Volta Regional Director of National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has appealed the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to support women political aspirants.
She suggested that MMDAs should support women with their internally generated funds.
Ms Sapaty was speaking at the close of a five-day workshop for 50 women who would contest the district assembly election.
The participants included 10 men drawn from 10 districts of the Volta Region and was organized by Christian Mothers' Association, a Catholic women's association, with financial support from German Development Agency (GTZ).
She advised spouses to remain the backbones of women aspirants and encourage them.
Mr Victor-Hermann Condobrey, Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive, said given women the opportunity and leverage to participate in the decentralization and decision-making processes, democracy would be the winner.
He said women who have already brazed the trail politically are distinguishing and discharging their Constitutional responsibilities with admiration.
Ms Philomena Ashun, Project Officer of CMA said their objective was to encourage more women to participate and get involved in active politics and especially district level elections.
She said about 97 people mostly women, who benefited from similar training have won district level elections in 2009, urging aspirants to make judicious use of resources and evolve innovative campaign messages.
Ms Edith Akpoto, the Presiding Member of Hohoe Municipal Assembly, said empowering women to take centre-stage in decision-making at the grassroots level was equal to consolidating decentralisation, good governance and rule of law.
She commended Mr John Peter Amewu, former MCE of Hohoe for sponsoring aspirants in the 2006 district level elections.
