Ejura (A/R), July 18, GNA- The Ejura-Sekyedumase District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has launched a community civic education programme to help address child labour, teenage pregnancy and truancy among the youth.
The programme is aimed at educating parents on their roles and responsibilities as regards the education, upbringing, training and development of their children.
Mr Samuel Agyenim-Boateng, Assistant Civic Education Officer, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Ejura that, a number of parents in the area shirk their responsibilities towards their children, resulting in some school-children engaging in economic activities to fend for themselves.
Such negative attitude and practice by some parents lead some young girls to drop out of school and engage in early sex and marriage, Mr Agyenim-Boateng said.
The Civic Education Officer reminded parents that until their children attained the age of 18 years and above, they were responsible for the children's upkeep and development.
"Whether a child will further his or her education, learn a trade or vocation, it is the responsibility of the parents", he said, and deplored the practice of some parents, who push their daughters into early marriage.
Mr Agyenim Boateng called on Assembly Members, Unit Committees, traditional authorities, School Management Committees and religious leaders to join hands and enact bye-laws to restrict school-going children from attending video shows, dances and funeral wake-keepings to check indiscipline.
