Sandema (UE), May 25, GNA - The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has underscored the need for hospital staff to respect the dignity of patients and avoid discriminating against them. The District Director of the NCCE in charge of the Builsa District in the Upper East Region, Mr. Pontius Pilate Apaabey Baba, made the call during the District Constitutional Week organized by the NCCE in Sandema. He explained that under the Constitution of Ghana, the rights of the patients were supposed to be protected by the staff of the hospital, by not disclosing confidential reports of patients to others. According to him, people who report to hospitals for treatment deserved both psychological and medical attention, both of which were essential for patients' recovery.

Whilst commending the Staff of the Builsa District Hospital for their hard work, he urged them to be punctual and committed to their responsibilities of saving lives. The Medical Superintendent of the Sandema Hospital, Dr William Gudu reiterated the need for health workers to preserve the privacy of their clients who disclose certain critical health conditions to them during consultations.

He said the situation where patients' medical conditions were made public was unprofessional and also violates the ethics of the Medical profession. He said such indiscreet behaviour also had the potential of eroding the confidence patients had in Medical Staff. 25 May 10
