NGO, WaterAid intensify sanitation education

The Janok Foundation, a community-based organization at Sabon Zongo in Accra in collaboration with WaterAid Ghana, have intensified hygiene education in the area to curb a cholera outbreak.

At the launch of the Sabon Zongo Sanitation Day to compliment government’s efforts, Madam Jane Amerley Oku, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Janok Foundation, said the programme was to sensitise groups, clubs and food vendors on the need to keep a clean environment.

She said effective and sustainable awareness, such as house-to-house campaigns and the promotion of hygiene among the people of Sabon Zongo were her NGO’s objectives.

Madam Oku urged the people to take advantage of the programme to improve on their personal hygiene and appealed to them to be more proactive to the current unhealthy practices associated with indiscriminate defecating and dumping of refuse into drains.

The CEO acknowledged the contribution of the government and its partners, especially WaterAid Ghana, for their support to enhance sanitation and environmental hygiene at Sabon Zongo.

Mr Ibrahim Musah, the Director of Policy Planning, in-charge of Partnership Division of the WaterAid Ghana, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, urged the Sub-Metropolitan Assemblies to scale up efforts at monitoring sanitation and hygiene conditions within the communities.

He said: “this should be preceded by a comprehensive public education on the relevance of ensuring a clean environment at all times.”

Mr Musah bemoaned the apathy shown by the people during cleanup exercises in their communities and advised them to change that attitude.
