Oil Watch, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) operating in the country has called for the production of non-fossil renewable energy in Africa.
That type of fuel is believed to be cheaper, accessible and friendly to both human and the environment.
Mr Noble Wadzah, Convener of Oil Watch Ghana, made the call in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Half Assini on Wednesday, at a day’s awareness raising session on positive and negative impact of oil and gas on Ghanaians.
He said, unlike other continents, Africa had a lot of wind and sun shine which could be used for energy production other than oil and gas which were environmentally harmful.
He said in the cold temperate European countries, they neither had sufficient wind nor sunshine, hence their over dependence on fossil fuel for energy.
Mr Wadzah said the programme had been organised to interact with the people and to identify the capacity needs to confront the destructive impact of oil and gas production on social life and the environment.
He said the event was part of Oil Watch's general assembly that took place in Accra on May 14 to 17 this year, to share views, identify strategies and create stronger networks of resistance to degradation and unsustainable extraction.
The Convener said, speakers at the forum were drawn from oil producing countries in Africa including Ghana, Congo, Nigeria, Uganda, Sudan and South Africa.
Mr. Pius Amenlemah, Jomoro District Oil Watch Convener, in his welcoming address said, Jomoro had made it possible for Ghana to join oil producing and exporting countries in the world hence the forum.
He expressed gratitude to all who made it possible for the programme to come on.
Madam Augustina Essel Cudjor, Matron at Nkroful Agricultural Senior High School who presided over the function said, the programme should not be a nine-day wonder but should be continued from time to time to sensitise the people in the area on the impact of oil and gas on their lives.
About 200 participants who attended the forum included fishermen, assembly members, opinion leaders and youth associations from the district.**
