Project HEY, a non-governmental organisation has donated 10 laptop computers and text books worth GH? 10,000.00 to the St Morris Roman Catholic Junior High School, La to give the students practical education in Information Technology (IT).

Naa Adoley Mensa, Founder of the Project said it is necessary to undertake the step because the students only have oral education in IT without getting the opportunity to experience usage of computers.

She said the organisation intends to provide training sessions for the students in IT.

“We have targeted 30 students who will in turn help their colleagues in the subject,” she said.

Naa Adoley Mensa said 30 students were targeted for the donation in every class, hence three persons to one computer could be helpful.

She said she felt it was her responsibility to help her community.

“In an educational system where Information Communication Technology is a subject examined in the BECE exam, it is shameful that over 70 per cent of Ghanaian public school do not have computers”.

She said the next step as an organisation is to stop teaching IT in schools and set up an IT laboratory and library in communities where students could visit to learn much about the subject.

Mrs Sarah Matey, Assistant Head Teacher of St Morris Roman Catholic JHS, La who received the equipment on behalf of the students expressed gratitude to the organisation for always taking a step to impact lives.

“Initially we used to teach IT orally without having any equipment to make the students have a practical knowledge about it; however, this step by Project HAY will make a big difference in their lives”.

She said, the organisation was at their aid two years ago with similar provisions, which made the students excel in their final examination, adding that the current step would make a bigger impact in the lives of the students.

She appealed to other non-governmental organisations to come to the aid of the school with desks that would be used for studying IT.

Project HEY is focused on educating underprivileged Ghanaian children using ICT.
