The Modern Women of Wisdom Organization, an Accra-based humanitarian NGO donated assorted items to a three-month-old orphan at Hanaku orphanage in Sunyani on Wednesday.
The baby, according to the Caretaker, was brought to the Orphanage some months ago by the Social Welfare Department.
The NGO donated items such as baby clothing, diapers, baby feed, baby wipes, shoes, etc. to the child.
According to the NGO, this gesture was made to honour the 50th birthday Celebration of their Patron, lawyer Charity Akua Foriwaa Dwomoh, who has been very supportive of the group.
The entourage was led by the Chief Executive Officer of the group, Nana Ama Asantewaa Kwarkoh, and supported by Miss Agnes Ashun (Project Coordinator) and Dorcas Serwaa Akoto (Organizer).
Speaking to the media, lawyer Charity Akua Foriwaa Dwomoh expressed joy at the honour bestowed on her by the group. She said people must not see orphans as burdens in the community.
She said we must give orphans what they need to thrive, not just survive. She said this would break the cycle that creates orphans in the first place, and the next generation of children will have us to thank for. The fact that the society didn’t abandon them but instead raised them in a healthy and loving environment.
According to her, there will be less crime, less disease and fewer orphaned children to take care of in the society when this is done.
Also speaking to the media, the President of the group, Nanahemaa Ama Frimpong asked the Government to run a system where orphans in the orphanages are made to live in a family as it is being done in developed countries.
She said the Social Service department must identify noble families who will raise orphans as one of their own instead of keeping them under one roof in a residential place.
The occasion was graced by Nana Abena Boatemaa, National President of National Council of Women Traditional Leaders of Ghana and Manageress of Royalnab enterprise.
