Tree is Life Foundation, an environmental Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) based at Effiduase has embarked on a tree planting programme to help protect the environment in the Sekyere East District.

Nana Samuel Kwarteng Dankwah, Executive Director of the Foundation, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) during the start of the exercise at Effiduase that, the aim was to help mitigate the negative effects of climate change in the District.

He said the tree planting exercise would be carried out in schools, around water bodies and along the main streets and roads at Effiduase and Asokore.

He said the Foundation, which began operations in 2017, was committed to improving vegetation in communities while helping to protect rivers and streams to maintain their natural status.

Nana Dankwah said seedlings of trees of Royal Palm, Millitia, and Weeping Willow, among other plants, which had been supplied by the Forestry Commission were being planted.

“We are motivated by the fact as indicated by the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13, which stresses on the need of commitment to Climate Action.

Global warming is causing long-lasting changes to our climate system, which threatens irreversible consequences if we do not act,” he pointed out.

Nana Dankwah said communities such as Nsutem, Effiduase and Asokore were going to be the starting point for the exercise and would be extended to other communities in the District.

He cautioned against indiscriminate felling of trees and said such practice degraded the environment.

Nana Dankwah called for public support to help the Foundation achieve the aim of planting trees in all communities in the District.
